ORLANDO – Orlando Predators defensive lineman Adrian Awasom spent a recent afternoon at Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando at "The Call for Photos" event on behalf of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (www.vvmf.com).

The event was organized to support "The Wall That Heals" mobile museum effort, which allows the souls enshrined on the rolling memorial to forever be recognized for their contributions to our country.

"The Call for Photos" encourages family members to have photos scanned of those that lost their lives so they may accompany their names on the memorial.

Awasom spent the afternoon greeting Vietnam Veterans and their families, providing bottled water and taking photos with fans and well-wishers at the display.

"I love the opportunity to work with people in the community," Awasom said. "Seeing the displays and meeting the men and women that served in Vietnam gives you a real perspective on things."

Since its inauguration in 1996, "The Wall that Heals" has visited over 350 cities throughout the United States.

The memorial also acts as a mobile museum for visitors to tour and includes pictures and stories of some of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War, along with displays that chronicle history and facts of the war.

Preds Show Support For Local Military Families At FreedomFest

ORLANDO – Members of the Orlando Predators football team and front office staff spent Saturday afternoon showing support for the United States Armed Forces and their families at Winter Park FreedomFest, where on display was the Rolling 911 Memorial along with food vendors and amusements for children.

The event was organized to thank deployed troops and their families from Florida for their service. Gift cards, diapers and other items were collected to be distributed by non-profit organizations on behalf of Operation Homefront, which provides emergency financial help to families of Florida Service members and wounded veterans.

Silent auction items were also donated by the Preds in an effort to help raise money for local military families.

"We always take the opportunity to show our support for those that sacrifice so much to defend our freedom," said Keith Recine, Predators Corporate Sponsorship Coordinator. "These brave men and women do so much for us and we should do as much as we can for them and their families when the opportunity arises."

The Predators were also represented by staff members Marlon McClary and Juan Aguilera, Preds defensive lineman Bert Whigham, and promotional team members Brittney and Gwen.

"I always enjoy coming to these types of events,” said Whigham. “It always turns out to be a lot of fun."

Whigham was on hand to talk with fans and sign autographs. Brittney and Gwen helped distribute schedule cards and encouraged local fans to take part in the upcoming Arena Football League season.

Event organizer Teri Boardman said the Winter Park FreedomFest will generate substantial funds to help Florida service members and their families.

"Operation Homefront is such a great organization and necessary to the overall defense of our nation. We are proud to put on this event and help such deserving individuals that risk everything to defend our liberty," Boardman said.

Predators Quarterback Collin Drafts Reads “Cover to Cover”

ORLANDO – Orlando Predators quarterback Collin Drafts spent his Friday afternoon last week filming a segment for the Lockhart Middle School "Cover to Cover" reading program.

The program is a response to the 2008 Reading on the Rise report published by National Endowment for the Arts, which revealed that 45 percent of Americans had never read a single book cover to cover.

Next week Lockhart will make an impact in its community. They have invited 880 people, including the 340 students at the middle school who have never read a book cover to cover, to simultaneously read "Mudshark" by Gary Paulsen in one sitting on Monday, Jan. 30.

The Lockhart Middle School students will read alongside each other in the gymnasium while the remaining members of the Lockhart family participate via live stream from around the campus.

Drafts was among those asked to participate in the filming of the book reading prior to the gathering. The film will run throughout the reading of "Mudshark" and act as narration for the event.

"Whenever a kid takes the time to read a book it gets them one step closer to success in life," Drafts said.

Drafts is one of a number of local celebrities who will be included in an edited video compilation of "Mudshark", joining Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, numerous members of the police and fire departments, and local business leaders.

Munsey will coach defensive backs for the South team. He recently teamed up with Schottenheimer and older brother, Marty, to help guide the United Football League’s Virginia Destroyers to a league title in 2011.

Kurt Schottenheimer spent 22 seasons in multiple roles in the NFL, primarily serving as a defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions.

Munsey will also be working closely with former Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator John Marshall and former NFL player and assistant coach Johnny Holland.

"I feel honored to have been asked to take part in the Players All-Star Classic," said Munsey, who won an ArenaBowl with Philadelphia in 2008. "It’s a great opportunity to work with colleagues in the outdoor game and it should only benefit our organization as far as discovering potential players who may be a good fit for the AFL."
